What Is Battery Storage?

A home battery storage system stores electricity generated by your solar panels during the day so you can use it in the evening, overnight, or during a power cut. Without a battery, any solar energy you generate but do not use immediately is exported to the grid for a small payment under the Smart Export Guarantee. With a battery, you keep that energy and use it yourself when grid electricity is at its most expensive.

Modern lithium-ion batteries are compact, quiet, and designed for daily cycling over 15 to 25 years. They mount on a wall in your garage, utility room, or outside, and integrate seamlessly with your solar PV system through a hybrid inverter. The entire setup is monitored via a smartphone app, giving you real-time visibility of how much energy you are generating, storing, and consuming.

Battery storage is not limited to homes with solar panels. You can also charge a battery from the grid during off-peak tariff periods (such as Octopus Go or Economy 7) and discharge it during expensive peak hours, a strategy known as energy arbitrage. However, the greatest savings come from combining battery storage with a solar PV system, allowing you to self-consume up to 70% of the energy your panels generate rather than the 30-40% typical without a battery.

Benefits of Battery Storage

  • Use your solar energy 24/7 — store daytime solar generation for evening use, increasing self-consumption from 25–50% (solar only) to 60–80% (with battery). With an EV charger too, 90%+ is achievable.
  • Blackout protection — with a hybrid inverter and battery, your home can continue running essential appliances during power cuts.
  • Maximise bill savings — avoid buying expensive peak-rate electricity by using stored solar energy when grid prices are highest.
  • Smart tariff optimisation — charge from the grid at 7p/kWh overnight and use that energy during the day when rates are 30p+/kWh.
  • Future-proof your home — as energy prices continue to rise and the grid transitions to time-of-use pricing, a battery gives you control.
  • 0% VAT on domestic installations — battery storage installed alongside or added to an existing solar system qualifies for zero-rate VAT.

How Battery Storage Works with Solar

When your solar panels generate more electricity than your home is consuming, the surplus energy flows into your battery rather than being exported to the grid. The hybrid inverter manages this process automatically, prioritising your home's loads first, then charging the battery, and only exporting once the battery is full.

In the evening, when your panels stop generating and your energy use increases, the system automatically switches to drawing power from the battery. This means you are using your own free solar energy rather than buying expensive electricity from the grid. The transition is seamless, with no interruption to your power supply.

On a typical summer day in South Yorkshire, a 10-panel solar system might generate 25-30 kWh of electricity. A household using 10 kWh during daylight hours would have 15-20 kWh of surplus. A 10 kWh battery captures a large portion of this surplus, effectively providing free electricity from late afternoon through to the following morning.

During winter months when solar generation is lower, the battery still provides value by storing any surplus daylight generation and by enabling smart tariff strategies. You can programme the battery to charge from the grid during cheap overnight periods and discharge during expensive daytime slots, saving money even when solar output is minimal.

Battery Sizing Guide

Choosing the right battery size depends on your household energy usage, solar system size, and how you want to use the battery. Here is a general guide to help you understand your options.

5 kWh

Starter Battery

Ideal for smaller households or as an entry-level battery alongside a modest solar system. Covers evening energy usage for a 1-2 person household. Provides basic backup power for essential circuits during outages. Best suited for homes with a 3-4 kW solar system and below-average energy consumption.

10 kWh

Most Popular

The most popular choice for a typical 3-4 bedroom family home. Stores enough energy to power your home from late afternoon through to the following morning. Pairs perfectly with a 10-14 panel solar system. Provides meaningful backup protection during extended power cuts and maximises your self-consumption ratio.

14+ kWh

High Demand

Designed for larger homes, properties with EV chargers, or households with high energy consumption. A larger battery captures more surplus solar energy and provides extended backup power during outages. Essential if you want to achieve near-complete energy independence from the grid.

Technical Guide

Inverter Types: DC, AC, and Hybrid Coupling

How your battery connects to your solar panels affects efficiency and cost. The right coupling depends on whether you're installing solar and battery together or retrofitting a battery to existing panels.

Best Efficiency

DC-Coupled (Hybrid)

Solar energy flows directly from the panels into the battery via a single hybrid inverter, with only one DC-to-AC conversion. Round-trip efficiency: 95–98%.

Best for new installs where solar and battery are installed at the same time. Tesla Powerwall 3 and Fox ESS hybrid inverters use DC coupling.

  • Highest efficiency
  • Fewer components
  • Best for new installs
Most Flexible

AC-Coupled

Solar panels connect to a standard solar inverter, and a separate battery inverter connects to the AC circuit. Three conversion steps reduce efficiency to 89–94%.

Best for retrofitting a battery to existing solar. Works with any existing solar PV installation regardless of brand or age.

  • Compatible with existing solar
  • Can also charge from grid
  • Slightly lower efficiency
Best of Both

Hybrid-Coupled

Combines AC and DC paths to achieve near DC-coupled efficiency with retrofit flexibility. Suitable for complex systems or phased installations where solar is added first.

GivEnergy's All-in-One (AIO) and Fox ESS H3 Pro are examples of hybrid-coupled approaches offering the best compromise.

  • Near DC efficiency
  • Retrofit flexibility
  • More complex setup

Battery Lifespan: What to Expect

Modern LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries degrade at approximately 1–2% capacity per year. The typical lifespan is 10–15 years, with well-managed systems lasting up to 20 years. At 10 years, most batteries retain 70–80% of their original capacity.

Cycle life varies by brand: Sigenergy offers the highest at 10,000 cycles (LFP, 100% DoD), while Tesla Powerwall 3, Fox ESS, and GivEnergy are rated at 6,000+ cycles. At one full cycle per day, 6,000 cycles equals 16+ years of operation.

Tesla Powerwall 3 ~6,000+ cycles / 10 yrs warranty
Sigenergy 10,000 cycles / 10 yrs warranty
Fox ESS 6,000+ cycles / 10 yrs warranty
GivEnergy 6,000+ cycles / 12 yrs warranty
Hanchu 6,000+ cycles / 10 yrs warranty

ElectriFusion Solutions provides lifetime warranties on all batteries we install — covering both product defects and capacity degradation beyond warranty thresholds, subject to terms. All our brands use LFP chemistry, which is safer and longer-lasting than NMC alternatives used in some older systems.

Smart Tariffs & VPP

Maximise Returns with Time-of-Use Tariffs

A battery transforms your home from a passive electricity consumer into an active energy trader. These tariffs are designed for battery owners.

Tariff Off-Peak Rate Peak Rate Est. Annual Saving
Octopus Intelligent Flux 14.99p (2–5am) 34.97p (4–7pm) £200–£350+/yr
Intelligent Octopus Go 7p (23:30–05:30) Standard rate £150–£280/yr
Octopus Agile Variable (avg ~15p) Variable (up to 100p) £100–£250/yr
Octopus Cosy 12.92p (3 windows) 39.53p (4–7pm) £80–£200/yr

Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Income

Battery owners can now earn additional income by joining a Virtual Power Plant — a network of home batteries that respond to grid demand signals. The grid operator pays you to discharge your battery at peak times, reducing stress on the network.

  • Tesla VPP via Octopus Energy (launched UK July 2025): earn up to £300/month
  • Fox ESS VPP via Axle Energy / Capture AI: automated arbitrage, no action required
  • Octopus Intelligent Flux: manages battery remotely; holds 20% reserve, dispatches 80% at peak

Battery Without Solar

A battery is worthwhile even without solar panels — through time-of-use tariff arbitrage. Charge at 7–10p/kWh overnight, discharge at 24–35p/kWh during the day. A 10 kWh battery cycling daily saves approximately £2.10/day — around £766/year. On a £5,000 system, payback is approximately 6.5 years.

Standalone battery also qualifies for:

  • • 0% VAT (standalone batteries included since February 2024)
  • • VPP income programmes
  • • Smart tariff optimisation
  • • Backup power during outages (with EPS)

Frequently Asked Questions

Got Questions? We Have Answers.

Everything you need to know about solar panels, battery storage, and working with ElectriFusion Solutions.

01
While solar panels work without a battery, adding one significantly increases your energy savings. Without a battery, you only use solar electricity when the sun is shining and your panels are generating. A battery stores excess daytime energy for use in the evenings when electricity is most expensive. Most households use 50–70% of their solar generation with a battery, compared to 30–40% without one.
02
Modern lithium-ion solar batteries typically last 10–15 years or more. The batteries we install from Tesla, Hanchu, Fox ESS, and Sigenergy are designed for 6,000–10,000 charge cycles, which translates to 15–25 years of daily use. Our lifetime warranty on batteries gives you complete peace of mind.
03
Yes, if you have a hybrid inverter and battery system. During a power cut, a hybrid system can disconnect from the grid and power your essential appliances using stored battery energy. Not all systems offer this — it depends on the inverter type. Our team designs systems with backup capability if this is important to you.
04
Battery size depends on your energy usage and solar panel system. A typical UK household uses 8–10kWh per day. A 5kWh battery covers evening usage for most smaller households, while a 10–14kWh battery provides more independence and better backup during outages. Our free survey includes an analysis of your energy usage to recommend the right battery size.
05
Yes, we can retrofit a battery storage system to an existing solar installation. Depending on your current inverter, we may be able to add a battery-compatible unit or install a separate battery inverter.
