Why Choose ElectriFusion Solutions in Huddersfield

Huddersfield is the largest town in the Kirklees district, home to 141,692 people at the 2021 Census. Set in the Colne Valley at the eastern edge of the Pennines, Huddersfield is characterised by its stone-built architecture and hillside setting that gives many properties excellent elevated positions for solar panels. Kirklees Council declared a climate emergency in January 2019 and has been one of the most proactive local authorities in Yorkshire on renewable energy. The council was an early participant in the Green Deal and has invested in energy efficiency across its housing stock. Kirklees has also supported community energy projects, with several solar installations on public buildings across the district. Huddersfield's Pennine hillside setting creates a distinctive advantage for solar. Properties in Lindley, Fixby, Marsh, and Almondbury sit on south-facing slopes that naturally angle roofs toward the sun. The stone-built terraces of Paddock, Marsh, and the Colne Valley villages (Slaithwaite, Marsden, Meltham) have solid roof structures that support modern solar panels well. The valley bottom areas around Milnsbridge and Longroyd Bridge are the only areas where hillside shading might reduce generation — even here, systems perform well during the peak summer months. The Met Office's Huddersfield (Oakes) station averages 1,384 hours of sunshine a year (1991–2020), and PVGIS models output about 7% below Doncaster's — but the elevated hillside positions and south-facing slopes compensate. Average house prices around £195,000 and the comprehensive district coverage (including Dewsbury, Batley, Mirfield, Holmfirth, and Brighouse) make Kirklees a substantial market.

Why Huddersfield is Great for Solar

Huddersfield's Pennine hillside setting means properties in Lindley, Fixby, Marsh, and Almondbury sit on natural south-facing slopes. These hillside positions angle roofs 10–20° toward the sun compared to flat sites, generating more electricity per panel. Stone-built roof structures are also exceptionally sturdy, easily supporting the weight of modern solar arrays.

Huddersfield Population

Population: 141,692 (2021 Census). University of Huddersfield campus.

Solar Potential

Annual sunshine: 1,384 hours (Met Office, Huddersfield Oakes, 1991–2020). Modelled output (PVGIS 5.2): 916 kWh per kW facing south, 740 kWh per kW east-west. A 4.85kW system generates approximately 3,590–4,440 kWh a year. Hillside positions compensate for lower sunshine — south-facing Pennine slopes angle panels toward the sun more directly. Stone roofs support panel weight well.

Council Support

Kirklees Council declared a climate emergency in January 2019 and has been proactive on renewable energy. Early Green Deal participant. Community energy projects supported. Energy efficiency investments across council housing stock.

12-panel 5.8kW solar array + 5kWh Fox ESS battery

A stone-built detached home in Lindley — on the elevated north-western edge of Huddersfield — with a rear roof facing south on a natural Pennine hillside slope. The hillside position provides a bonus tilt angle toward the sun, generating approximately 4,840 kWh annually from 12 AIKO panels — above the flat-site equivalent. The Fox ESS battery captures afternoon Pennine sunshine for evening use. Annual savings: £1,270. The stone roof structure was in excellent condition and required no preparatory work. Payback forecast: 6.3 years.

Pennine output: how Huddersfield compares

Huddersfield is not the sunniest place we install, and it is worth knowing by how much. The Met Office's long-term average for its Huddersfield (Oakes) station is 1,384 hours of sunshine and 1,041 mm of rain a year (1991–2020). PVGIS, which models output from satellite solar-radiation data rather than sunshine hours, puts a south-facing roof here at about 916 kWh a year per kW of panels, against 980 in Doncaster and 986 in Gainsborough — roughly 7% less than Doncaster.

Month by month the shortfall is smallest in midsummer and largest in December and January (our guide sets the figures out). That changes two decisions. Payback is a little longer, other things being equal, and a battery here leans more on a cheaper overnight grid tariff in winter, because in December and January a south-facing 4.85 kW roof averages only about 4.5 kWh a day, much of it used as it is generated.

Terraces, split roofs and Kirklees conservation areas

Kirklees has more terraced and semi-detached housing than the national average — about a third of homes each, according to Home Energy West Yorkshire. If your roof is split east and west rather than facing south, PVGIS puts it at about 740 kWh a year per kW of panels, so a 4.85 kW system produces roughly 3,590 kWh instead of the 4,440 kWh it would facing due south. That is about 81% of the south-facing figure, so whether it pays depends on the installed price and how much electricity you use in the daytime; we model each slope separately before quoting.

Kirklees also has around 60 conservation areas, including Huddersfield Town Centre, Edgerton, Birkby, Almondbury, Greenhead Park, Marsden and Holmfirth. On a house that is not listed, the designation does not stop panels on a pitched roof slope, provided they project no more than 0.2 m and sit no higher than the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney); what it restricts is a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway. Listed buildings need planning permission and listed building consent, so we confirm the position with Kirklees Council at survey.

Connecting in Huddersfield

HD postcodes sit in Northern Powergrid's Yorkshire area. If the combined inverter rating at the property — solar and battery together — is no more than 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, about 11 kW across three phases), the system is notified under G98 once it is installed; above that, a G99 application has to be approved first. We submit whichever applies. If you are reading this because you are not sure the numbers work on a Pennine roof, our guide on whether Huddersfield is too cloudy for solar panels goes through the figures month by month.

Frequently Asked Questions for Huddersfield

Common questions from Huddersfield homeowners about solar panels, battery storage, and renewable energy.

Have a question not answered here?

Ask Our Huddersfield Team
How much does a 4.85 kW solar system generate in Huddersfield?

PVGIS models about 4,440 kWh a year for a 4.85 kW system facing due south at 35 degrees in Huddersfield, and about 3,590 kWh on a roof split east and west. Shading, pitch and panel choice move the real figure, which is why each slope is measured at survey.

Can I fit solar panels on a house in Almondbury or Edgerton?

Both are conservation areas in Kirklees. On a house that is not listed, the designation alone does not stop panels on a pitched roof slope, provided they project no more than 0.2 m and sit no higher than the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney); it restricts panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway. A listed building needs planning permission and listed building consent. We check your address with Kirklees Council before designing the system.
