Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant

£7,500 Off Your Heat Pump — We Handle Everything

The UK Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a grant of £7,500 for air source heat pump installations. To claim it, your installer must be MCS certified — which we are. We submit the grant application, manage all paperwork, and the £7,500 is deducted directly from your installation cost before you pay. There are no forms for you to complete.

How Air Source Heat Pumps Work

Air source heat pumps extract heat energy from outside air — even at temperatures as low as -20°C — and use a refrigerant cycle to amplify that heat and deliver it into your home as central heating and hot water. The process is the same technology as your fridge and freezer, but running in reverse.

For every unit of electricity a heat pump consumes, it produces 3–4 units of heat. This ratio — called the Coefficient of Performance (COP) — means heat pumps are 300–400% efficient, compared to a modern condensing gas boiler's 90% efficiency. Even as electricity costs more per unit than gas, the efficiency advantage means many homeowners see comparable or lower running costs — and as the grid decarbonises, running costs improve further over time.

Modern heat pumps work at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers — typically 35–45°C versus a boiler's 60–80°C. This means they work best with well-insulated homes and correctly-sized radiators. Our MCS surveyors calculate the heat demand of every room in your home before selecting and sizing your heat pump system to ensure it performs correctly from day one.

Is My Home Suitable?

Most homes built after 1970 are suitable for heat pump installation, and many older homes can be made suitable with targeted insulation improvements. Key factors our surveyors assess include: loft insulation (at least 100mm recommended), cavity wall insulation where applicable, existing radiator sizing (we upgrade undersized radiators as part of the installation), and outdoor space for the heat pump unit.

Properties that are best suited include detached and semi-detached homes with gardens, bungalows, and new-builds. Victorian terraces with solid walls require more significant insulation investment, and our surveyors will advise honestly if insulation improvements are needed before installation to achieve the expected efficiency.

Properties currently using oil or LPG central heating — typically off the mains gas network — represent the most financially compelling heat pump candidates. Replacing oil heating with a heat pump typically saves £600–£1,200 annually in fuel costs, in addition to the £7,500 BUS grant. Our surveyors will provide a full cost-benefit analysis as part of your free survey.

Our Heat Pump Installation Process

From initial enquiry to a fully-commissioned heat pump system — a typical timeline with no surprises.

01

Free Home Survey

Our MCS surveyor visits your property, assesses insulation levels, calculates room-by-room heat demand, and designs a system sized precisely for your home.

02

Grant Application

We submit your Boiler Upgrade Scheme application to Ofgem. The £7,500 grant is deducted from your installation cost before you pay — zero forms for you.

03

Installation Day

Our engineers install the outdoor heat pump unit, indoor cylinder, and all pipework. Most installations complete in 1–2 days with minimal disruption.

04

Commission & Handover

We commission the full system, balance your radiators, set up your smart thermostat, and walk you through operating your heat pump for maximum efficiency.

Why Heat Pumps Pair Perfectly with Solar

Free Daytime Heating

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. Smart heat pump controllers use this free electricity to heat your hot water cylinder and boost your heating system — so your solar energy directly powers your heating at zero fuel cost.

Battery Storage Extends the Savings

Add a battery storage system and your surplus solar generation charges the battery — which then powers your heat pump in the evening and overnight. Many homes cover the majority of their heat pump's electricity needs from solar and battery storage.

Lowest Possible Carbon Footprint

A heat pump running on solar electricity has near-zero carbon emissions. Even running on grid electricity, a heat pump produces around 3 times less carbon per unit of heat than a gas boiler — a figure that improves every year as the grid decarbonises.

Single Installer for Everything

ElectriFusion Solutions installs heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage, and EV chargers. One survey, one team, one warranty. We design your whole home energy system to work together optimally.

Typical Combined System

Heat pump + solar panels + battery storage

Annual heating bill (gas boiler) £1,200–£1,800
Annual heating bill (heat pump only) £600–£900
Annual heating bill (heat pump + solar) £150–£350
Carbon reduction vs gas boiler 70–90%
