Why Heat Pumps and Solar Panels Are the Perfect Pairing

The combination of an air source heat pump and solar panels represents the most complete route to a low-carbon, low-cost home energy system currently available to UK homeowners. The logic is straightforward: solar panels generate free electricity from your roof, and a heat pump uses that electricity to heat your home three to four times more efficiently than a gas boiler. Used together, they can reduce a household's combined energy bills by 60–80% while eliminating nearly all carbon emissions from heating.

The synergy between the two technologies is particularly strong because their operational patterns align well. Solar panels generate most electricity in spring and summer — exactly the seasons when heat pumps need to work least hard (lower heating demand, better efficiency at mild temperatures). In winter, when heat demand is highest and solar generation is lower, the heat pump draws more from the grid, but at off-peak times its running costs are still dramatically lower than gas. The result is a year-round system where costs and carbon are minimised across all seasons.

How Air Source Heat Pumps Work with Solar

An air source heat pump extracts heat energy from outdoor air and moves it into your home — typically achieving a Coefficient of Performance (CoP) of 3 to 4, meaning every 1kW of electricity consumed produces 3–4kW of heat. This is dramatically more efficient than a gas boiler (approximately 90% efficient at best) or an electric storage heater (100% efficient, but no multiplier effect).

When paired with solar panels, a portion of the electricity the heat pump consumes comes free from your roof. In spring and autumn — the shoulder seasons when heat pumps operate frequently and solar generation is substantial — you can run the heat pump almost entirely on solar electricity. Modern smart controls allow you to set the heat pump to prioritise solar generation, heating your home or your hot water cylinder when the sun shines rather than drawing from the grid. See our heat pump installation service for details of the systems we install.

Costs, Grants, and Financial Returns

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a £7,500 grant for air source heat pump installations in England and Wales, significantly reducing the upfront cost of the technology. A typical air source heat pump installation costs £10,000–£16,000 before the grant, coming to £2,500–£8,500 after it. Combined with a solar panel system (£5,500–£9,500 depending on size), the total investment for a complete solar-plus-heat-pump system is £8,000–£18,000 after all grants and incentives.

Annual savings from this combination are substantial. A household previously spending £1,800 on gas heating and £900 on electricity might reduce total energy costs to £400–£600 with the combined solar and heat pump system — a saving of £2,100–£2,300 per year. At these saving rates, payback periods of 5–9 years are achievable, and the system's lifespan of 20–25 years means decades of dramatically reduced energy bills. Battery storage added to the package further optimises performance and savings.

Is Your Home Suitable for a Heat Pump and Solar System?

Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes. If your property has loft insulation, wall insulation, and double glazing, it is likely suitable. Homes with underfloor heating or large radiators (which can operate at lower flow temperatures) achieve the best efficiency. Older, draughty properties may need some insulation work before a heat pump delivers optimal results — our engineers assess this during the free home survey.

Solar panels work on almost any roof with a broadly south-facing aspect. East-west configurations are also viable with minor adjustments to system design. The roof must be in reasonable condition and free from significant shading. Our assessment process covers all these factors: roof condition, orientation, shading analysis, current energy usage, insulation levels, and heating system compatibility. We design bespoke systems tailored to your specific property rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Call us on 01302 203 755 to arrange a free combined assessment.

Installation Timeline and What to Expect

A combined solar and heat pump installation is typically completed in two to four days. Day one covers the solar panel installation: scaffolding, mounting system, panels, inverter, and commissioning. Day two to four covers the heat pump: outdoor unit positioning and mounting, refrigerant pipework, indoor unit installation, hot water cylinder replacement if required, and system commissioning. Our teams for both installations are directly employed ElectriFusion Solutions engineers — no subcontracting.

Following installation, we provide full training on both systems, set up remote monitoring apps for solar and heat pump, and register both systems with the relevant schemes: MCS for solar and heat pump, Smart Export Guarantee for solar, and RHI/BUS for heat pump grant confirmation. See our solar installation and heat pump installation service pages for detailed specifications.

Solar Panels Sheffield

South Yorkshire · 18 miles from base

Sheffield's famous seven hills give hundreds of thousands of homes elevated, south-facing roof positions that generate more solar electricity than flat sites. Properties in Ecclesall, Dore, and Totley on the south-western hillsides achieve some of the best solar yields in South Yorkshire.

Solar Panels Leeds

West Yorkshire · 35 miles from base

Leeds is the UK's largest financial centre outside London, and its affluent northern suburbs — Roundhay, Alwoodley, Moortown, Chapel Allerton — are packed with large, high-value detached homes whose owners are early adopters of premium home improvements. A 16-panel system with battery storage on a £450,000 Alwoodley home saves £1,400+ per year and adds genuine value to the property.

Solar Panels Rotherham

South Yorkshire · 12 miles from base

Rotherham's ex-mining community housing — built solid with generous roof footprints and typically south-facing front elevations — represents some of the best value-for-money solar installations in South Yorkshire. Properties in Maltby, Thurcroft, and Dinnington can often accommodate larger systems at lower installation costs.

Solar Panels Derby

Derbyshire · 50 miles from base

Derby is Rolls-Royce and Toyota territory — an engineering city whose homeowners understand the technical and financial case for solar. The city's manufacturing heritage means many people already think in terms of efficiency, payback, and ROI, making them ideal solar customers.

Solar Panels Harrogate

North Yorkshire · 55 miles from base

Harrogate's affluent homeowner base and high property values (£350,000+ average) mean solar installations add significant property desirability alongside financial savings. The large Victorian and Edwardian properties can accommodate 16–20 panel systems that generate substantial electricity, and Harrogate buyers actively seek energy-efficient homes.
