From first call to switch-on: what happens, and what should be inside the price
Four stages, and the Selby-specific decision that gets made at each one.
- 1. Enquiry and desk check. Before anyone drives up the A19 we check the things that change the job on paper: your YO8 postcode against the Selby Town Conservation Area boundary, whether the property is listed or sits within the grounds of a listed building, and whether your supply is single-phase or three-phase. That last one decides which grid application you need, and it is cheaper to know on day one than on install week.
- 2. Survey and design. Roof pitch, aspect and covering, fixing type, shading, cable route and where the inverter and any battery will physically live. The design decision that matters most is inverter output, because it sets whether your connection is a G98 notification or a G99 application — see the next section.
- 3. Written quotation. A fixed price against a named specification, with an MCS performance estimate. ElectriFusion Solutions Ltd is MCS certified and a RECC member, so the RECC consumer code applies to a domestic contract — you should be reading a written quote, not a verbal number.

The four lines every Selby quote should itemise
Comparing our £6,499 against a rival's £5,900 is meaningless if you cannot see what each price contains. Insist on all four lines in writing — from us, and from anyone else you are asking:
- Supply and installation of the panels, inverter, mounting rails and fixings, with the make and model of each stated.
- Labour, and scaffolding stated as in or out. This is the classic hidden cost in UK solar and it is the single most common reason two quotes that look £600 apart are not.
- Testing, commissioning and the grid notification or application to Northern Powergrid.
- Warranties, separately for product and for workmanship, with who holds each one and for how long. Ours is a 15-year workmanship warranty from ElectriFusion Solutions Ltd (company number 15276574, which you can check at Companies House), with up to a 30-year product warranty on the panels themselves.
Extra costs to check for before you sign
- Roof repair or strengthening. A roof that needs work is a roof job first and a solar job second. If your covering is at the end of its life, do the roof first — you do not want to pay for scaffold and a panel strip-and-refit five years from now.
- Consumer unit or fuse board upgrade. Older Selby housing stock frequently needs this before a solar or EV charger circuit can be added compliantly.
- Adding a battery later rather than now. Retrofitting means paying for the visit, and often the scaffold, twice. If storage is on the plan at all, price it at the same time.
- A G99 application. If the design exceeds the G98 threshold, the application has to be approved before commissioning, which puts a third party on your timeline. Again — a design-stage decision, not an install-week surprise.
- Access constraints. Three-storey elevations and terraced frontages with no side access change the scaffold, and Selby's older streets have plenty of both.
Planning permission for solar in Selby after the council merger — and which portal to actually use
Selby District Council no longer exists. It was abolished on 1 April 2023 along with the six other North Yorkshire district councils under The North Yorkshire (Structural Changes) Order 2022, and North Yorkshire Council took over as the unitary authority. You can verify it in one click: selby.gov.uk now redirects straight to northyorks.gov.uk.
But "North Yorkshire Council handles it" is only half the answer. The council states on its own planning pages that it delivers the service "differently depending on where it is", and Selby applications still sit in the former Selby District planning area. The live portal is publicaccess.northyorks.gov.uk, whose own banner reads "Public Access for Harrogate, Scarborough, Craven, Hambleton and Selby Planning Areas". Search it on YO8 and you get the Selby record set.
Watch for the old portal. public.selby.gov.uk is still online and still branded "North Yorkshire Council (Selby)", but it carries the notice "This website is no longer maintained and will be removed shortly". An old bookmark or an old blog link will land you on stale planning data for your own street. If the page you are reading says "OLD Public Access", leave it.
The permitted development limits, as numbers
Most Selby roofs take solar as permitted development, which means no application. The conditions are specific and testable, so check yours against them rather than against a vague reassurance:
- On a pitched roof, panels must not project more than 200mm (0.2m) from the roof slope, and must not sit above the highest part of the roof, excluding the chimney.
- On a flat roof, the highest part of the equipment must be no more than 600mm above the highest part of the roof, excluding the chimney.
- On a wall, balcony or roof enclosure abutting a highway, the equipment must not protrude more than 0.2m beyond the plane of the wall; on any other wall, balcony or roof enclosure, not more than 0.4m.
- Panels must not be installed on a building within the grounds of a listed building, or on a scheduled monument site.
- Equipment should be removed when no longer needed, as soon as reasonably practicable.

If you are in the town centre, the Abbey quarter or Millgate
Selby town centre is covered by a conservation area — North Yorkshire Council publishes a Selby Town Conservation Area Appraisal, and the designation takes in the Abbey church and its surrounds, the market place and Finkle Street. In a conservation area the additional rule bites: panels must not be fitted to a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway. A roof slope facing a highway is treated differently from a wall facing one, which is precisely the distinction a generic national page will not draw for you — and it is why a Finkle Street property and a Brayton semi are not the same job.
There is a second layer here that nobody else mentions. Selby town centre also sits inside the Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone , described by North Yorkshire Council as a project part-funded by Historic England to increase vibrancy in the town centre through community engagement and building regeneration, offering property improvement grants to local shop and business owners for urgent repair works, alongside a "Streets for All" streetscape audit run with Historic England. If you own a shop or a commercial building in the HAZ footprint, your roof is a heritage asset with a live funding programme attached to it, and the sensible order of work is fabric repair first, panels second. The council's page does not state an end date for the programme, so confirm it is still open before you build it into a budget.
Listed building? Solar on a listed building needs listed building consent regardless of permitted development, and the permitted development route is closed for buildings within a listed building's grounds. That is a pre-application conversation, not a survey-day one.
