UK Solar Incentives Guide
Solar Panel Grants & Financial Incentives in 2026
While there is no single government grant that covers the full cost of solar panels for every homeowner, there are several significant financial incentives that make going solar in 2026 more affordable than ever. From 0% VAT to the Smart Export Guarantee and ECO4 scheme, this guide explains every option available to you.
0% VAT on Domestic Solar Installations
The most significant financial incentive for homeowners considering solar panels in 2026 is the 0% VAT rate on all domestic solar panel installations. Introduced by the UK government in April 2022, this policy eliminates VAT on the supply and installation of solar panels, inverters, battery storage systems, and all associated mounting and electrical equipment for residential properties.
Prior to April 2022, domestic solar installations were subject to 5% VAT. The move to 0% VAT represented an immediate saving of hundreds of pounds for homeowners. On a typical system costing £6,500, the VAT saving compared to the standard 20% rate is over £1,000, and compared to the previous 5% reduced rate, the saving is approximately £325.
The 0% VAT policy has been extended through at least March 2027, giving homeowners a substantial window to take advantage. However, there is no guarantee the policy will be extended indefinitely, so those considering solar should factor this into their timing. To qualify for 0% VAT, the installation must be carried out by a certified installer on a residential property. ElectriFusion Solutions is fully MCS certified, ensuring all our domestic installations automatically qualify for the zero VAT rate.
The 0% VAT rate also applies to battery storage systems when installed alongside solar panels or retrofitted to an existing solar PV system. This means you can add a battery to your solar setup without paying any VAT on the battery, inverter, or installation costs, making it an excellent time to invest in a complete solar and storage package.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The Smart Export Guarantee is a government-backed scheme that pays you for surplus solar electricity you export to the National Grid.
How the SEG Works
The Smart Export Guarantee, introduced in January 2020, requires all licensed energy suppliers with more than 150,000 domestic customers to offer at least one export tariff to small-scale generators. This means any homeowner with an MCS-certified solar panel system can sign up to receive payments for electricity they export to the grid.
When your solar panels generate more electricity than your home is using at any given moment, the surplus flows back into the National Grid. Your smart meter measures this export, and your SEG supplier pays you for every kilowatt-hour exported. You choose which supplier to export with, and it does not need to be the same company you buy your electricity from.
SEG tariffs vary significantly between suppliers. Fixed-rate tariffs from open suppliers typically pay 4–6p/kWh. Customer-tied tariffs (requiring you to be a customer of that supplier) pay considerably more — currently up to 25–32p/kWh at peak times on Octopus Intelligent Flux, which requires a battery and Octopus Energy membership. Good Energy's Solar Savings Exclusive pays 25p fixed for existing customers.
| Supplier & Tariff | Rate (p/kWh) | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Octopus Intelligent Flux | 25–32p (peak) | Customer + battery required |
| Good Energy Solar Savings | 25p fixed | Customer + installer required |
| EDF Export 12m | 15p fixed | EDF customer required |
| British Gas Export & Earn Plus | 15.1p fixed | BG customer required |
| Ecotricity Smart Export | 16p variable | Customer required |
| Fuse Energy (open) | ~13p variable | No conditions |
| Octopus Outgoing Fixed (open) | 12–15p fixed | No conditions |
Rates correct as of April 2026. All tariffs require MCS certification and a smart meter.
SEG Eligibility Requirements
- MCS-certified installation — your solar panel system must be installed by an MCS-certified installer and registered on the MCS database. All ElectriFusion Solutions installations are MCS certified.
- Smart meter required — you need a smart meter capable of recording half-hourly export data. If you do not have one, your energy supplier will install one free of charge.
- System size up to 5 MW — the SEG covers systems up to 5 MW, which means all residential and most commercial solar installations qualify.
- DNO notification — your installer must notify your Distribution Network Operator of the installation. ElectriFusion Solutions handles this as part of every installation.
Typical SEG Earnings
A 10-panel solar system exporting approximately 2,000 kWh per year earns between £80 and £200 annually depending on tariff rates. Combined with bill savings of £800 to £1,100, total annual returns of £900 to £1,300 are achievable.
ECO4 Scheme
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme is a government programme that requires large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements for low-income and vulnerable households. Under ECO4, qualifying homeowners can receive free or heavily subsidised solar panel installations as part of a package of measures designed to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
ECO4 was extended to December 2026, having originally been due to close in March 2026. Eligibility is based on household income below £31,000, receipt of qualifying means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Child Tax Credit, and a property with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G. Over 38,000 solar installations have already been funded under ECO4. The typical value of a funded solar installation is £5,000–£7,500.
If you believe you may qualify, contact your energy supplier directly or speak to your local authority. ElectriFusion Solutions can also advise during your free home survey on whether ECO4 funding may be available for your circumstances.
Warm Homes: Local Grant
The Warm Homes: Local Grant replaced the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2) from April 2025. Delivered through local authorities, it provides up to £15,000 for energy efficiency measures (including solar panels) and a further £15,000 for low-carbon heating — a combined maximum of £30,000 per household.
Eligibility targets lower-income owner-occupiers and privately rented properties with an EPC rating below C. In South Yorkshire, Sheffield's Low Carbon Project has secured £1.59 million for 144 SMEs, and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has committed to 3,500 green jobs under its net zero 2040 target — creating an active pipeline of funded retrofit schemes.
Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, and Barnsley councils have all participated in funded solar schemes in recent years. Availability changes as funding rounds open and close — our team stays up to date with active local schemes.
Call 01302 203 755 and our team will advise on every local grant currently open. Even without grant funding, the combination of 0% VAT, Smart Export Guarantee income, and current solar panel prices delivers typical payback in just 7–12 years.
Local Grants & Schemes
Beyond national programmes, South Yorkshire and surrounding local authorities have their own active solar and net-zero funding streams.
Sheffield Low Carbon Project
A £1.59 million fund supporting 144 South Yorkshire SMEs to install solar panels, LEDs, and other low-carbon measures. Businesses can receive grant contributions toward equipment and installation costs. Contact Sheffield City Council's Low Carbon Economy team for current availability.
South Yorkshire Low Carbon Grant
A £3.4 million SYMCA (South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority) programme supporting 260 SMEs across Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, and Barnsley with low-carbon technology grants. The SYMCA has committed to 3,500 green jobs under its net zero 2040 target, with solar installation a core element.
Local Authority Warm Homes Delivery
Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, and Barnsley councils all administer portions of the Warm Homes: Local Grant and prior HUG2 funding. Availability and eligibility varies by funding round. Councils target households with EPC D–G ratings and incomes under £36,000. Our team monitors active local rounds continuously.
Feed-in Tariff (FiT) — Closed
The Feed-in Tariff scheme closed to new applicants on 1 April 2019. Existing recipients continue to receive generation tariffs of up to 43p/kWh — significantly higher than current SEG rates. If you have a pre-2019 system and are not currently claiming, contact your energy supplier as you may still be entitled to payments for the remainder of your tariff period.
Also Consider: Boiler Upgrade Scheme for Heat Pumps
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides £7,500 toward an air source heat pump — extended until at least 2030. While not a solar grant, combining solar panels with a heat pump maximises your self-consumption and can eliminate gas heating bills entirely. The combination of solar + heat pump + battery is the gold standard for household energy independence.
