The Daikin models we fit, and what they cost to run in Doncaster

We fit Daikin's wall-mounted ranges and can quote for other major brands on request. The table compares the 2.5 kW version of each model on the figures in Daikin UK's own specification sheets: seasonal cooling efficiency (SEER), seasonal heating efficiency (SCOP), the energy labels, and the indoor unit at its quietest setting.

Running costs at October 2026 prices

The clearest way to show running cost is per unit of cooling or heat delivered. The Ofgem price cap for Yorkshire, which covers Doncaster, is 25.60p per kWh on direct debit from 1 October to 31 December 2026, and there is no VAT on household electricity until 31 March 2027. Divide that price by a unit's seasonal rating and you get the average cost of each kWh it delivers:

• Cooling with a Perfera (SEER 9.47): about 2.7p per kWh of cooling.
• Heating with a Perfera (SCOP 5.2): about 4.9p per kWh of heat.
• Heating with a Comfora (SCOP 4.61): about 5.6p per kWh of heat.
• A plug-in or panel heater turns each kWh of electricity into one kWh of heat, so it costs the full 25.60p.

Seasonal ratings are averages across a year's conditions. A unit working hard on the hottest afternoon or the coldest morning does worse than its rating, and better on a mild day. How many kWh a room needs depends on its size, glazing, insulation and how you use it, which is what the survey works out.

Since 2025, new single-split systems holding less than 3 kg of refrigerant cannot use a refrigerant with a global warming potential above 750. All five models above use R-32, which has a global warming potential of 675.

Planning permission for air conditioning in Doncaster

City of Doncaster Council is the planning authority. Class G of the householder rules has long allowed an air source heat pump on a house in England without planning permission; since 29 May 2025 that has included reverse-cycle air conditioning units, as long as they are not used solely for cooling. Every system we fit heats as well as cools. The conditions:

• How many: one unit on a semi-detached or terraced house, two on a detached house, and one for a whole block of flats.
• Size and position: an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres on a house (0.6 on a block of flats), never on a pitched roof, and at least 1 metre in from the edge of a flat roof.
• Walls facing a road: outside a conservation area, a unit on a wall that fronts a highway cannot be above ground-floor level.
• Noise: no more than 37.0 dB(A) at each assessment position, 1 metre outside a neighbour's habitable-room window or door, worked out with the MCS 020 a) calculation.
• Conservation areas: not on a wall or roof that fronts a highway, and not nearer a highway than the house itself.
• Listed buildings: no Class G rights, so planning permission is needed, and listed building consent where the work affects the building's character.
• Cooling-only units: no householder permitted development at all, so they need a planning application.

Doncaster has 46 conservation areas, including residential suburbs such as Bessacarr, which the council describes as almost completely residential. The council's current Article 4 directions deal with changes of use to houses in multiple occupation and the demolition of particular buildings rather than external alterations, so the national rules above are the ones that apply to most Doncaster homes. The council also counts around 800 listed buildings.

Flats are treated differently. In planning law a flat is not a house, so the allowance belongs to the whole block, and in practice the freeholder or management company usually has to agree to anything fixed to the building. How hot Doncaster gets

The Met Office publishes Doncaster's long-term averages from its Finningley station, about 9 km from the city centre: an average daily maximum of 22.30°C in July and 21.89°C in August (1991–2020), a little warmer than Sheffield's 21.35°C in July. Finningley's own records end in 1995, so the Met Office fills the later years from well-correlated nearby stations. Averages hide the peaks, and on the hottest days it is rooms with large south- or west-facing windows, or rooms under the roof, that hold heat into the night.
