Air Conditioning Chesterfield: Homes & Businesses
Air conditioning for homes and businesses in Chesterfield and the surrounding part of north-east Derbyshire, installed and serviced from our base in Doncaster, about 25 miles away. The Daikin systems we fit are reverse-cycle: they cool in summer and heat in winter.
Chesterfield differs from our South Yorkshire towns in two ways that affect a quote: it is in a different electricity price region, and it has four Article 4 directions on top of its conservation areas. Both are explained below.
Planning in Chesterfield: 12 conservation areas and four Article 4 directions
Chesterfield Borough Council is the planning authority. It has 12 conservation areas and four Article 4 directions in force: the Abercrombie Street, Barrow Hill and Town Centre conservation areas, and one covering Upper Newbold Close, Moorhay Close and Water Meadow Lane. They differ from each other: the town centre direction removes permitted development for exterior painting only, while Barrow Hill covers windows, doors, porches, roof alterations, chimneys and painting. None of the published schedules mentions heat pumps, but an address in one of those areas is still checked against its own schedule before a position for an outdoor unit is agreed.
Elsewhere, a reverse-cycle unit on a house follows the national Class G rules. It is permitted development if it is not used only for cooling, there is one unit (two on a detached house), the outdoor unit is no larger than 1.5 cubic metres and not on a pitched roof, and it passes the 37.0 dB(A) noise calculation at the neighbour. In a conservation area it must not go on a wall or roof that fronts a highway.
The town's best-known building shows why listed buildings are handled separately. The church of St Mary and All Saints, famous for its crooked spire, is listed Grade I; Historic England's entry describes a 228 ft timber spire clad in herringbone lead, twisted and leaning several feet in each of three directions. Listed buildings have no permitted-development rights for heat pumps, so any listed property needs planning permission first.
Running costs on East Midlands electricity prices
Chesterfield sits in the East Midlands electricity region rather than Yorkshire. The Ofgem price cap there is 25.36p per kWh on direct debit from 1 October to 31 December 2026, against 25.60p in Yorkshire, with a lower standing charge of 51.45p a day against 61.67p. Household electricity carries no VAT until 31 March 2027.
At 25.36p, each kWh of cooling from a 2.5 kW Daikin Perfera (SEER 9.47) costs about 2.7p, and each kWh of heat (SCOP 5.2) about 4.9p. The Comfora, the least efficient of the five models we fit, works out at about 3.5p for cooling and 5.5p for heat. A plug-in or panel heater costs the full 25.36p for every kWh of heat. Chesterfield homes, summers and where the unit goes
At the 2021 Census 44.9% of Chesterfield's households lived in a semi-detached house, 24.7% in a detached house, 17.8% in a terrace and 12.3% in a flat. A detached house usually offers more choice of position; on a semi or a terrace the outdoor unit is placed to meet the noise limit at the neighbour's nearest habitable-room window, where extra distance and a solid wall or fence in between both help.
The Met Office's long-term figures for Chesterfield come from its Ashover No 2 station, about 9 km south-south-west of the town: an average daily maximum of 21.06°C in July and 20.57°C in August (1991–2020). Its observations end in 2015, and the Met Office fills the later years from nearby stations.

Chesterfield Borough Council's June 2025 noise policy gives maximum noise levels for air conditioning units at business premises near homes as an example of the planning conditions its environmental protection team may recommend. A shop, office or workshop system is therefore designed around its neighbours from the outset, and installations in business premises are charged VAT at 20%.

Not usually for a reverse-cycle unit on a house that meets the Class G conditions, including the 37.0 dB(A) noise limit at the neighbour. The exceptions are listed buildings, positions on a wall or roof fronting a highway in one of the 12 conservation areas, cooling-only units, and properties covered by one of the borough's four Article 4 directions, which are checked individually.

A single-room split system costs £1,200–£2,700 fully installed and a two- or three-room multi-split £3,000–£6,000, depending on the model, pipe run and access. Installed in a home it is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027; business premises pay 20%.
Can I get a grant for air conditioning in Chesterfield?
Only if the system replaces your heating entirely. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme's £2,500 air-to-air grant requires the heat pump to replace oil, gas, LPG or electric heating and to meet the whole home's space heating demand, and it has to be claimed by an installer whose MCS certification covers air-to-air heat pumps — check any installer's entry on the MCS website before relying on it. Our own MCS certification covers solar PV and battery storage, so we quote air conditioning without the grant. Units added for cooling, or alongside a gas boiler, don't qualify in any case.
