What solar panels generate in Lincoln, by roof direction
These figures come from the EU's PVGIS model for a point in Lincoln city centre, with the settings we use for every town we cover: crystalline panels, 14% system losses, 35° for a south-facing roof and 30° for east and west. They are modelled output per kilowatt-peak (kWp), not readings from a particular house.

Lincoln's 1,017 is the best figure of the towns we serve, but the table shows the thing that matters more: the 21% gap between a south-facing roof and an east/west one. In a city where half the households are in a terrace or a flat, the usable slope is often the only slope, and which way it faces is the first thing we check.
The Met Office's Waddington station, 6 km south of the centre, is one of the few in our area still taking its own observations: 1,631 hours of sunshine and 615 mm of rain a year on the 1991–2020 averages. That is about 7% more sunshine than Finningley near Doncaster, and a little more rain, which the modelled figures already account for.
Planning in Lincoln: 11 conservation areas on the historic core
City of Lincoln Council has designated 11 conservation areas, covering 226.91 hectares, which the council puts at 6.36% of the city. They follow the historic core: Cathedral and City Centre (designated April 1968 and extended in 1975), St Peter at Gowts, Lindum and Arboretum, St Catherines, Gowts Bridge and West Parade among them. The council also lists 418 listed buildings. The large suburbs are outside the designations, and the villages south and west of the city, North Hykeham, Waddington, Bracebridge Heath, Skellingthorpe, Washingborough and Canwick, are in North Kesteven District Council's area rather than the city's.
For a house in a conservation area the designation restricts less than people expect. Since the householder rules were amended in August 2026, panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway need permission; an ordinary roof slope is still permitted development, provided the panels project no more than 0.2 m and sit no higher than the highest part of the roof, excluding the chimney. A flat roof in a conservation area needs a prior-approval application before work starts, and a listed building needs planning permission and listed building consent.
Lincoln's three Article 4 directions, City Centre (1979), Monks Road (1981) and Swanpool, apply to named addresses and chiefly concern extensions, porches and exterior painting; a separate city-wide direction, in force since 1 March 2016, covers converting a house into a small house in multiple occupation. We check the address against all of them at survey, so the quote is written knowing whether an application is needed.
Grid connection in Lincoln, and what the quote should include
National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the network in Lincoln. A system whose inverters total no more than 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply) is notified under G98 after installation; above that, a G99 application has to be approved before commissioning, which can add weeks and is settled before the scaffold is booked. We submit whichever applies and it is in the quote.

The price does not change because Lincoln is 30 miles from the office; what moves it is the property. On Lincoln's terraces, where 29.6% of households live, access for the scaffold and the route from the roof to the consumer unit are the usual variables; on a flat, the freeholder's consent and the shared roof come first.

A Lincoln worked example at this winter's prices
Assumptions stated so you can change them. A 10-panel 4.85 kWp south-facing system is modelled at about 4,930 kWh a year. Ofgem's typical medium household uses 2,500 kWh of electricity a year (from 1 July 2026), and the Ofgem price cap for the East Midlands on direct debit from 1 October to 31 December 2026 is 25.36p per kWh plus a 51.45p daily standing charge, with no VAT on household electricity until 31 March 2027 — about £820 a year before solar.
If the household uses 40% of its generation itself, that is about 1,970 kWh it no longer buys, worth about £500. The other 2,960 kWh or so is exported; at 12p per kWh, which is what Octopus's Outgoing tariff paid in October 2026 (rates differ by supplier and change), that earns about £355. Together roughly £855 a year, so the £6,499 standard package pays back in about 7.6 years. More daytime use raises the saving; an east/west roof makes about a fifth less; a battery changes the split between what you use and what you export, which is a separate calculation.
