Solar + EV: The Perfect Combination

1

Panels generate electricity

Your AIKO solar panels generate DC electricity from sunlight throughout the day.

2

Smart charger detects surplus

The smart charger monitors your home consumption in real-time and detects when solar is generating more than you're using.

3

Surplus charges your EV

Instead of exporting cheap excess solar to the grid, the surplus flows directly into your EV battery — effectively free miles.

4

Grid backup when needed

On days with low solar, the charger can switch to grid power — but only during your cheapest tariff times (e.g. Octopus Go at ~7p/kWh).

EV Charger FAQs

How much does a home EV charger cost?
A home EV charger installation typically costs between £800 and £1,200 depending on the charger model and the complexity of the electrical work required. This includes the charger unit, installation, and any necessary consumer unit upgrades. Smart chargers that integrate with solar panels may cost slightly more but offer significant long-term savings by allowing you to charge with free solar energy.
Can I charge my EV with solar panels?
Yes — pairing solar panels with a smart EV charger is one of the most cost-effective ways to run an electric car. A typical solar PV system generates enough excess energy during the day to add 30–50 miles of range to your EV daily, completely free. Some smart chargers automatically divert excess solar energy to your car, maximising free charging without manual intervention.
How long does it take to install a home EV charger?
A standard home EV charger installation typically takes 2–4 hours. This includes mounting the charger, running cabling from your consumer unit, and final testing and commissioning. If a consumer unit upgrade is needed, this may add an additional hour or two. Our NAPIT-registered electricians handle the entire process.
Do I need off-street parking for an EV charger?
For a dedicated home EV charger, you generally need off-street parking (a driveway, garage, or private car park). If you park on the street, there are some cable management solutions available, but these have limitations. During your free survey, our team assesses your parking situation and recommends the best charging solution.
What type of EV charger do you recommend?
We typically recommend 7kW smart chargers for home use — they fully charge most electric cars overnight (6–8 hours) and offer smart features like scheduled charging, solar integration, and app control. For homes with solar panels, we specifically recommend chargers with solar diverter functionality to maximise free charging. For commercial properties, we can install faster 22kW chargers.
