Battery Storage in Tickhill
MCS-certified battery storage installation across Tickhill and the DN11 postcodes, from our base at Gresley House in Doncaster. We fit batteries alongside new solar panels, as a retrofit to panels you already have, or on their own to charge from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff, and we size them from Tickhill's own generation figures rather than a national average.
PVGIS puts a south-facing Tickhill roof at 982 kWh a year per kW of panels, within half a percent of Doncaster. A 4.85 kW array makes about 4,762 kWh a year here, 0.2% more than Doncaster. What that means for a 5 or 10 kWh battery, how the connection is registered with Northern Powergrid, and what City of Doncaster Council does and does not restrict are covered below.
How much a Tickhill roof can store
PVGIS 5.2 (the EU Joint Research Centre's model, SARAH2 radiation record, south-facing at 35°, 14% losses, fetched 15 October 2026) gives a 4.85 kW array in Tickhill these monthly totals:
| Month | Array output (4.85 kW) | Average per day |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 168 kWh | 5.4 kWh |
| Mar | 418 kWh | 13.5 kWh |
| May | 596 kWh | 19.2 kWh |
| Jun | 554 kWh | 18.5 kWh |
| Jul | 579 kWh | 18.7 kWh |
| Sep | 447 kWh | 14.9 kWh |
| Nov | 210 kWh | 7.0 kWh |
| Dec | 165 kWh | 5.3 kWh |
From May to August the array averages 18.4 kWh a day, so on a sunny day a 5 kWh battery fills from the roof with daytime usage still covered, and a 10 kWh unit fills on the longer days. From November to January the average drops to 5.9 kWh a day, most of it used as it is generated; a battery that is meant to work in winter needs a time-of-use tariff to charge overnight.
The full twelve months, with what they mean for a 5 kWh and a 10 kWh battery, are in Tickhill solar output month by month.
Registering the battery with Northern Powergrid
Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Tickhill, so the battery is registered with it. What you register depends on the total inverter output at the property, including any existing solar inverter. Up to 16 A per phase in total, 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, is a G98 notification after installation. Above that, for example a 5 kW hybrid battery inverter on a single-phase supply, a G99 application has to be approved before the system is switched on. We submit whichever applies, and it is on the quote.
Batteries on their own, and charging from the grid
A battery without panels can make sense in Tickhill where a roof is shaded, north-facing or not yours to change. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates a battery supplied and installed in a home until 31 March 2027, and that expressly includes a standalone battery that stores electricity from the grid. It earns its keep by filling in the cheap overnight window of a time-of-use tariff and discharging into the evening peak; the saving is the gap between the two rates, multiplied by what the battery can shift each day.
If you also have panels, do not add grid-charging savings on top of solar savings for the same days: a battery filled from the grid overnight is already full when the morning's solar surplus arrives. Our battery storage page sets out the models we fit and their usable capacities.
Choosing a battery in Tickhill
Two numbers size a Tickhill battery: the evening load, which your smart meter already records, and the roof's surplus in the months you care about, which the table above gives. City of doncaster council has designated 46 conservation areas. Add the solar inverter to the battery inverter before assuming G98 applies; a retrofit often tips into G99.
Panels and battery together are priced on our solar panels in Tickhill page; the battery models are on battery storage: how it works.
Renting, planning and City of Doncaster Council
A wall-mounted battery inside the house, in a garage or in an outbuilding needs no planning permission; it is an electrical installation notified under Building Regulations, which we do through our competent-person registration. City of Doncaster Council is the planning authority for Tickhill, with 46 conservation areas where an external unit on a highway-facing wall is checked first; listed buildings need consent for any external fixing. If you rent, your landlord's written agreement comes before anything is fixed to a wall.
Tickhill battery storage questions
Who do I register a Tickhill battery with?
Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Tickhill, so the battery is registered with it. Up to 3.68 kW of total inverter capacity per phase is a G98 notification after the install; above that it is a G99 application approved beforehand. We submit it.
Do I need solar panels to have a battery in Tickhill?
No. A battery on its own is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6 covers a standalone battery that stores grid electricity) and earns its keep on a time-of-use tariff, charging cheaply overnight and discharging into the 4pm to 7pm peak.
What happens to a Tickhill battery in December?
It charges from the grid. On PVGIS's averages a 4.85 kW array in Tickhill makes about 5.9 kWh a day in December and January and 18.4 kWh a day in high summer; the winter surplus after daytime use is a few hundred watt-hours, so the overnight tariff does the filling until March.
