Why Choose ElectriFusion Solutions in Barnsley
Why Barnsley is Great for Battery Storage
Barnsley's generous mining-era roof areas generate substantial solar surpluses — battery storage captures this for evening use, moving that surplus into the evening, when you would otherwise be buying electricity. Up to 15-year warranty. Fast from our Doncaster base.
Barnsley Population
Population: approximately 246,000. Households: approximately 108,000. Strong existing solar base creating retrofit battery demand.
Solar Potential
Battery storage increases Barnsley solar self-consumption to 70–80%. The borough's large roof areas generate generous daily surpluses ideal for battery capture.
Council Support
Barnsley Council is the planning authority, with 18 conservation areas across the borough. Energise Barnsley, a local community energy society, ran a Smart Solar project from May 2021 to September 2023 adding batteries to homes that already had solar panels.

3-bed semi with existing 8-panel system
5.8kWh Fox ESS EVO retrofit battery
A typical 1960s semi-detached in Wombwell where the homeowner's 8-panel system was exporting heavily during the day. The compact Fox ESS EVO 5.8kWh battery was wall-mounted in the under-stairs cupboard — the most space-efficient solution for a smaller home. AC-coupled to the existing system, installation took just half a day. The Fox ESS app shows real-time charging and discharging, and the owners now run the washing machine and dishwasher from stored solar in the evening. Annual additional saving: £390. Battery cost: £4,200. Estimated payback: under 11 years.

How much a Barnsley roof can put into a battery, month by month
A battery only stores what the panels produce beyond what the house is using at the time, so the right size depends on the season you are designing for. PVGIS models a south-facing roof in Barnsley at 958 kWh a year per kW of panels. Spread across the year for a typical 4.85 kW array, that is:
| Month | Array output (4.85 kW) | Average per day |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 165 kWh | 5.3 kWh |
| Mar | 414 kWh | 13.3 kWh |
| May | 576 kWh | 18.6 kWh |
| Jul | 571 kWh | 18.4 kWh |
| Sep | 429 kWh | 14.3 kWh |
| Nov | 200 kWh | 6.7 kWh |
| Dec | 161 kWh | 5.2 kWh |
PVGIS 5.2 (EU Joint Research Centre), Barnsley town-centre coordinates, south-facing at 35°, 14% losses. Averages: a sunny day produces more, an overcast one far less.
From March to September the array averages more than 13 kWh a day, which on an average day is enough to fill a 5 kWh battery once the daytime load is covered; a 10 kWh battery fills on sunnier days, mostly from April to August, when the array averages 17 to 19 kWh a day. In December and January it averages about 5 kWh a day, much of it used in the house as it is generated. So in Barnsley a battery fills from solar mainly from spring to autumn; to use it in December and January you would also charge it from the grid on a cheaper overnight rate.
Charging from the grid in winter, without counting the battery twice
Time-of-use tariffs let a battery fill overnight when electricity is cheap and discharge in the evening peak. Octopus's Flux tariff, for homes with solar panels and a battery, is one example: on its published rates for the Yorkshire region on 16 September 2026, import cost 14.64p per kWh between 02:00 and 05:00, 24.40p for most of the day and 34.16p between 16:00 and 19:00, with export paid at 27.17p in that same evening window. The import rates included VAT at 5% (export payments carry no VAT); VAT comes off household electricity on 1 October 2026, so expect the published import rates to change.
The mistake to avoid is adding the two benefits together. A battery filled from the grid overnight is already full when the next morning's solar surplus arrives, so on any one day the two uses compete for the same capacity, and their savings overlap rather than stack. Grid charging matters most from November to February, when a 4.85 kW Barnsley array averages under 9 kWh a day and the roof cannot reliably fill the battery on its own. Ask for the two to be modelled separately, month by month.
Which battery suits which Barnsley home
- Hanchu 5 kW hybrid — a 5.12 kWh battery with its own inverter, expandable to 30 kWh. Suits a modest array and evening use.
- Sigenergy SigenStor — starts at 5 kWh and grows in 5 kWh modules without replacing the inverter, with a built-in DC EV charger. Suits a household that expects to add an electric car.
- Fox ESS EVO — 10 kWh with a 5 kW inverter and an outdoor-rated (IP65) enclosure. Suits a larger array, or a house with no indoor space for the unit.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 — 13.5 kWh with a built-in solar inverter. Suits high evening loads or a winter grid-charging tariff.
Any battery inverter set above 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply — the 5 kW Hanchu and Fox ESS units, or a Powerwall 3 configured above that output — takes the property over the G98 limit and needs a G99 application approved by Northern Powergrid before commissioning.
Barnsley's housing stock shapes where the unit goes. The council's housing strategy records that around 60% of private homes are over 50 years old and almost 30% — some 22,500 — were built before 1919, so we check the consumer unit and the space available for the unit at survey, along with whether an external position would sit in one of the borough's 18 conservation areas, such as Elsecar, Penistone, Cawthorne or Worsbrough.
What a Barnsley battery quote should include
A battery supplied and installed in a home by the installer is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (5% from 1 April 2027) — whether it is added to existing solar panels or installed on its own to charge from the grid. A proper quote itemises the battery and inverter, any consumer unit work, the G98 notification or G99 application to Northern Powergrid, commissioning, and the warranty terms for both the battery and the workmanship. If a quote does not say who deals with the network operator, ask before you sign. For the full month-by-month picture, read whether a home battery fills up in winter.
Frequently Asked Questions for Barnsley
Common questions from Barnsley homeowners about solar panels, battery storage, and renewable energy.
Have a question not answered here?
Ask Our Barnsley TeamWill a battery fill up from my solar panels in winter in Barnsley?
Not usually. PVGIS models a 4.85 kW south-facing array in Barnsley at about 5 kWh a day in December and January, and much of that is used in the house as it is generated. From March to September the same array averages more than 13 kWh a day, which is when a battery fills from the roof. To get value from a battery in winter you would charge it from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff.
Who approves connecting a home battery in Barnsley?
Northern Powergrid, the distribution network operator for the S70 to S75 postcodes. What counts is the combined inverter rating of everything at the property that can export, solar and battery together. If that is no more than 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply) it is notified under G98 after installation; above that, for example a 5 kW hybrid battery inverter on a single-phase supply, it needs a G99 application approved before it is switched on. We submit either as part of the install.
