Battery Storage in Hull

Battery storage for homes in Hull (HU1 to HU9), installed by our own MCS-certified engineers from Doncaster, 45 miles down the road. New solar plus battery, a retrofit battery, or a standalone unit charged from the grid: the right size depends on Hull's monthly solar figures and your evening usage, not on a brochure number, so those figures come first.

PVGIS puts a south-facing Hull roof at 996 kWh a year per kW of panels, about 1.6% more than Doncaster. A 4.85 kW array makes about 4,829 kWh a year here, 1.6% more than Doncaster. What that means for a 5 or 10 kWh battery, how the connection is registered with Northern Powergrid, and what Hull City Council does and does not restrict are covered below.

How much a Hull roof can store

PVGIS 5.2 (the EU Joint Research Centre's model, SARAH2 radiation record, south-facing at 35°, 14% losses, fetched 15 October 2026) gives a 4.85 kW array in Hull these monthly totals:

MonthArray output (4.85 kW)Average per day
Jan172 kWh5.5 kWh
Mar424 kWh13.7 kWh
May612 kWh19.7 kWh
Jun562 kWh18.7 kWh
Jul595 kWh19.2 kWh
Sep447 kWh14.9 kWh
Nov212 kWh7.1 kWh
Dec165 kWh5.3 kWh

The Hull figure to design around is the gap between 18.7 kWh a day across May to August and 6.0 kWh a day across November to January. A 5 kWh battery fills from the roof on ordinary summer days; in the three darkest months it fills only if a cheap overnight tariff does the charging.

The full twelve months, with what they mean for a 5 kWh and a 10 kWh battery, are in Hull solar output month by month.

Registering the battery with Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Hull, so the battery is registered with it. Whether it is a G98 notification (after the install, up to 3.68 kW per phase in total) or a G99 application (before the install, anything larger, which most 5 kW hybrid inverters are on a single-phase supply) depends on adding the battery inverter to any solar inverter already there. We do the paperwork and say which one it is on the quote.

Batteries on their own, and charging from the grid

If panels are not an option in Hull, the battery alone still works on a time-of-use tariff, charging overnight at the low rate and discharging through the evening peak; HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates it, standalone or not, until 31 March 2027. What it saves is the difference between the two rates on every kilowatt-hour it shifts, which is why we ask about your tariff before your roof.

If you also have panels, do not add grid-charging savings on top of solar savings for the same days: a battery filled from the grid overnight is already full when the morning's solar surplus arrives. Our battery storage page sets out the models we fit and their usable capacities.

Choosing a battery in Hull

The roof is rarely what limits a Hull battery; the evening is. How much electricity the house uses between the panels switching off and bedtime decides whether 5 kWh or 10 kWh pays, and a smart meter's half-hourly data answers it in a week. Hull has approximately 119,000 households; the town averages about 1,430 hours of sunshine a year. If you are adding a battery to panels you already have, count the existing solar inverter towards the G98 limit above.

Panels and battery together are priced on our solar panels in Hull page; the battery models are on battery storage: how it works.

Renting, planning and Hull City Council

Inside the house or garage a battery is a Building Regulations notification, not a planning matter, in Hull as elsewhere. The exceptions are listed buildings and external units on a wall facing the street, where Hull City Council decides. Renters need written agreement from the landlord before the installation is booked.

Hull battery storage questions

Who do I register a Hull battery with?

Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Hull, so the battery is registered with it. Up to 3.68 kW of total inverter capacity per phase is a G98 notification after the install; above that it is a G99 application approved beforehand. We submit it.

Can I have a battery fitted without solar panels in Hull?

Yes. A standalone battery charges from the grid when electricity is cheap and discharges in the evening peak, on a time-of-use tariff open to battery-only homes. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates a battery supplied and installed in a home until 31 March 2027, including a standalone battery that stores grid electricity.

Will a battery fill from my Hull roof in winter?

Rarely from the roof alone. PVGIS gives a 4.85 kW array here about 6.0 kWh a day across November to January against 18.7 kWh a day in May to August; in winter the house uses most of what is generated as it arrives, so a battery that is to work in winter charges overnight on a time-of-use tariff.
