Battery Storage in York
Battery storage for homes in York (YO1 to YO32), installed by our own MCS-certified engineers from Doncaster, 50 miles down the road. New solar plus battery, a retrofit battery, or a standalone unit charged from the grid: the right size depends on York's monthly solar figures and your evening usage, not on a brochure number, so those figures come first.
PVGIS puts a south-facing York roof at 961 kWh a year per kW of panels, about 1.9% less than Doncaster. A 4.85 kW array makes about 4,662 kWh a year here, 2.2% more than Leeds. What that means for a 5 or 10 kWh battery, how the connection is registered with Northern Powergrid, and what City of York Council does and does not restrict are covered below.
How much a York roof can store
PVGIS 5.2 (the EU Joint Research Centre's model, SARAH2 radiation record, south-facing at 35°, 14% losses, fetched 15 October 2026) gives a 4.85 kW array in York these monthly totals:
| Month | Array output (4.85 kW) | Average per day |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 162 kWh | 5.2 kWh |
| Mar | 408 kWh | 13.2 kWh |
| May | 595 kWh | 19.2 kWh |
| Jun | 550 kWh | 18.3 kWh |
| Jul | 575 kWh | 18.5 kWh |
| Sep | 429 kWh | 14.3 kWh |
| Nov | 200 kWh | 6.7 kWh |
| Dec | 153 kWh | 4.9 kWh |
The York figure to design around is the gap between 18.2 kWh a day across May to August and 5.6 kWh a day across November to January. A 5 kWh battery fills from the roof on ordinary summer days; in the three darkest months it fills only if a cheap overnight tariff does the charging.
The full twelve months, with what they mean for a 5 kWh and a 10 kWh battery, are in York solar output month by month.
Registering the battery with Northern Powergrid
Northern Powergrid is the network operator for York, so the battery is registered with it. What you register depends on the total inverter output at the property, including any existing solar inverter. Up to 16 A per phase in total, 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, is a G98 notification after installation. Above that, for example a 5 kW hybrid battery inverter on a single-phase supply, a G99 application has to be approved before the system is switched on. We submit whichever applies, and it is on the quote.
Batteries on their own, and charging from the grid
A battery without panels can make sense in York where a roof is shaded, north-facing or not yours to change. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates a battery supplied and installed in a home until 31 March 2027, and that expressly includes a standalone battery that stores electricity from the grid. It earns its keep by filling in the cheap overnight window of a time-of-use tariff and discharging into the evening peak; the saving is the gap between the two rates, multiplied by what the battery can shift each day.
If you also have panels, do not add grid-charging savings on top of solar savings for the same days: a battery filled from the grid overnight is already full when the morning's solar surplus arrives. Our battery storage page sets out the models we fit and their usable capacities.
Choosing a battery in York
Two numbers size a York battery: the evening load, which your smart meter already records, and the roof's surplus in the months you care about, which the table above gives. York has approximately 90,000 households; the town averages about 1,400 hours of sunshine a year. Add the solar inverter to the battery inverter before assuming G98 applies; a retrofit often tips into G99.
Panels and battery together are priced on our solar panels in York page; the battery models are on battery storage: how it works.
Renting, planning and City of York Council
A wall-mounted battery inside the house, in a garage or in an outbuilding needs no planning permission; it is an electrical installation notified under Building Regulations, which we do through our competent-person registration. City of York Council is the planning authority for York, and listed buildings need consent for any external fixing. If you rent, your landlord's written agreement comes before anything is fixed to a wall.
York battery storage questions
Who do I register a York battery with?
Northern Powergrid is the network operator for York, so the battery is registered with it. Up to 3.68 kW of total inverter capacity per phase is a G98 notification after the install; above that it is a G99 application approved beforehand. We submit it.
Do I need solar panels to have a battery in York?
No. A battery on its own is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6 covers a standalone battery that stores grid electricity) and earns its keep on a time-of-use tariff, charging cheaply overnight and discharging into the 4pm to 7pm peak.
What happens to a York battery in December?
It charges from the grid. On PVGIS's averages a 4.85 kW array in York makes about 5.6 kWh a day in December and January and 18.2 kWh a day in high summer; the winter surplus after daytime use is a few hundred watt-hours, so the overnight tariff does the filling until March.
