Battery Storage in Thorne

Battery storage for homes in Thorne (DN8), installed by our own MCS-certified engineers from Doncaster, 10 miles down the road. New solar plus battery, a retrofit battery, or a standalone unit charged from the grid: the right size depends on Thorne's monthly solar figures and your evening usage, not on a brochure number, so those figures come first.

PVGIS puts a south-facing Thorne roof at 969 kWh a year per kW of panels, about 1.1% less than Doncaster. A 4.85 kW array makes about 4,701 kWh a year here, 1.1% less than Doncaster. What that means for a 5 or 10 kWh battery, how the connection is registered with Northern Powergrid, and what City of Doncaster Council does and does not restrict are covered below.

How much a Thorne roof can store

PVGIS 5.2 (the EU Joint Research Centre's model, SARAH2 radiation record, south-facing at 35°, 14% losses, fetched 15 October 2026) gives a 4.85 kW array in Thorne these monthly totals:

MonthArray output (4.85 kW)Average per day
Jan165 kWh5.3 kWh
Mar410 kWh13.2 kWh
May592 kWh19.1 kWh
Jun550 kWh18.3 kWh
Jul579 kWh18.7 kWh
Sep436 kWh14.5 kWh
Nov207 kWh6.9 kWh
Dec163 kWh5.3 kWh

The Thorne figure to design around is the gap between 18.3 kWh a day across May to August and 5.8 kWh a day across November to January. A 5 kWh battery fills from the roof on ordinary summer days; in the three darkest months it fills only if a cheap overnight tariff does the charging.

The full twelve months, with what they mean for a 5 kWh and a 10 kWh battery, are in Thorne solar output month by month.

Registering the battery with Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Thorne, so the battery is registered with it. Whether it is a G98 notification (after the install, up to 3.68 kW per phase in total) or a G99 application (before the install, anything larger, which most 5 kW hybrid inverters are on a single-phase supply) depends on adding the battery inverter to any solar inverter already there. We do the paperwork and say which one it is on the quote.

Batteries on their own, and charging from the grid

If panels are not an option in Thorne, the battery alone still works on a time-of-use tariff, charging overnight at the low rate and discharging through the evening peak; HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates it, standalone or not, until 31 March 2027. What it saves is the difference between the two rates on every kilowatt-hour it shifts, which is why we ask about your tariff before your roof.

If you also have panels, do not add grid-charging savings on top of solar savings for the same days: a battery filled from the grid overnight is already full when the morning's solar surplus arrives. Our battery storage page sets out the models we fit and their usable capacities.

Choosing a battery in Thorne

Sizing starts with the evening, not the roof: the kilowatt-hours used between dusk and midnight are what the battery has to cover, and a week of smart-meter data settles it. Thorne has approximately 5,500 households; the town averages about 1,400 hours of sunshine a year. A retrofit on existing panels counts the solar inverter towards the G98 limit, which is the usual reason a Thorne retrofit becomes a G99 application.

Panels and battery together are priced on our solar panels in Thorne page; the battery models are on battery storage: how it works.

Renting, planning and City of Doncaster Council

Inside the house or garage a battery is a Building Regulations notification, not a planning matter, in Thorne as elsewhere. The exceptions are listed buildings and external units on a wall facing the street, where City of Doncaster Council decides. Renters need written agreement from the landlord before the installation is booked.

Thorne battery storage questions

Who do I register a Thorne battery with?

Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Thorne, so the battery is registered with it. Up to 3.68 kW of total inverter capacity per phase is a G98 notification after the install; above that it is a G99 application approved beforehand. We submit it.

Is a standalone battery worth it in Thorne?

It can be, on the right tariff: the battery charges in the overnight window and runs the house through the evening peak, and the saving is the gap between the two rates on every unit shifted. VAT is 0% on a home battery, standalone included, until 31 March 2027 under HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6.

How much does a Thorne roof make in winter?

About 5.8 kWh a day from a 4.85 kW array across November to January on the PVGIS averages, against 18.3 kWh a day from May to August. Most of the winter figure is used as it is generated, which is why a winter battery runs on an overnight tariff rather than on the roof.
