Why Every EV Owner Needs a Home Charger
Public EV charging is expensive, slow, and inconvenient. At motorway rapid chargers, you typically pay 70–90p per kWh — three times the home electricity rate. At destination chargers in car parks and supermarkets, rates of 35–50p/kWh are common. Compare this to a home overnight rate of 24.5p/kWh on a standard tariff, or as little as 7–10p/kWh on Octopus Intelligent or similar smart tariffs. For a 60kWh EV battery costing £42–£54 to charge at public rapid rates, home charging costs just £4.20–£14.70. Over 10,000 miles per year, that difference is worth £600–£1,200 annually.
A home charger gives you the additional benefit of convenience: you plug in when you park, wake up to a full battery every morning, and never need to plan charging stops into everyday journeys. The psychological shift from "I need to think about charging" to "my car is always ready" is transformative for EV ownership. The OZEV grant makes installation affordable, and when combined with solar panels, a home charger can make your EV essentially free to run.
Types of Home EV Charger: What to Choose
Home EV chargers come in two levels: Level 1 (3-pin plug, 2.3kW) and Level 2 (dedicated wallbox, 7kW or 22kW). Level 1 is slow and not recommended for daily use — it adds approximately 8 miles of range per hour, meaning a fully depleted 60kWh battery takes 26 hours to charge. A 7kW Level 2 wallbox adds approximately 25 miles of range per hour, fully charging most EVs in 8–10 hours overnight. 22kW three-phase chargers are primarily for commercial or high-demand domestic use.
Within Level 2 wallboxes, smart chargers are now the standard. Smart chargers connect to your home Wi-Fi, allow scheduling, integrate with Octopus Intelligent and other EV tariffs for automatic cheap-rate charging, and offer solar divert functionality — automatically charging your car from surplus solar electricity rather than exporting it. The Ohme, Zappi, and Pod Point chargers are popular smart options. We install Zappi and compatible smart chargers that integrate seamlessly with solar and battery systems.

The OZEV Grant: How Much Can You Claim?
The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) provides a £350 grant toward home EV charger installation. To qualify, you must: own or have primary control of an eligible plug-in vehicle, live in a flat, rented property, or house without off-street parking (for certain categories), or have existing off-street parking. The grant applies to the complete installation cost including the charger unit and labour.
For typical homeowners with off-street parking, the grant reduces the installation cost significantly. A standard 7kW smart charger installation costs £800–£1,100 fully installed before the grant, coming to £450–£750 after it. For properties requiring a consumer unit upgrade or new dedicated circuit, costs are higher but the grant still applies to the eligible portion. Our team handles all OZEV grant paperwork as part of the installation — you do not need to apply separately. See our dedicated OZEV grant guide for full eligibility details.
Combining Your EV Charger with Solar Panels
The most powerful home energy setup combines solar panels, battery storage, and an EV charger into a single integrated system. The logic: solar generates electricity during the day, the battery stores surplus for the evening, and the smart charger prioritises solar electricity for your EV. During summer months, most UK EV owners with this setup can charge their car almost entirely from free solar electricity — reducing annual fuel costs to near-zero.
Solar divert functionality is key to this. A smart charger with solar divert continuously monitors your home's solar generation. When generation exceeds your home's consumption, instead of exporting the surplus at 12p/kWh, it diverts it to your car at the full electricity value of 24.5p/kWh. Over a year, a typical 4kW solar system can divert 1,500–2,500 kWh to an EV — saving £370–£615 in public or grid charging costs. The Zappi charger that we install supports this functionality and integrates with all major solar inverter systems. See our full EV and solar combination guide for detailed savings calculations.
Installation Process and What to Expect
A standard home EV charger installation takes three to five hours for our NAPIT-registered electricians. The process includes: survey of your consumer unit and electrical capacity, installation of a dedicated 7kW circuit, mounting the wallbox to an exterior wall or garage, testing and commissioning, and registration with the OZEV grant scheme. We handle all the paperwork.
Properties with older consumer units (older than 25 years) may require a consumer unit upgrade, which adds £200–£400 to the project. Our survey, carried out before quoting, identifies any upgrade requirements and provides a transparent all-inclusive fixed price. There are no hidden costs. We serve all of South Yorkshire, the East Midlands, and Northern England from our Doncaster base.
