Battery Storage in a Power Cut: Does Your Home Battery Keep the Lights On?
Not all home batteries provide blackout protection. We explain the difference between backup mode and islanding, which systems keep your home powered during a grid outage, and what you need to install.

Does Home Battery Storage Work During a Power Cut?
The short answer is: it depends on the battery and how it was installed. Most home battery storage systems sold in the UK are not automatically configured for blackout protection. During a grid power cut, a standard solar inverter and battery system will shut down — this is a deliberate safety feature required by UK regulations to prevent back-feeding the grid while engineers work on power lines. However, several battery systems sold by ElectriFusion Solutions can be configured for backup power operation, providing meaningful protection during grid outages.
There are two levels of backup capability in home battery systems. The first is "backup mode" — where specific circuits (typically the main ring main or selected circuits) are powered from the battery during an outage, but the solar panels are disconnected and cannot charge the battery while off-grid. The second is "islanding" or "off-grid mode" — where the system continues generating from solar panels AND draws from the battery simultaneously, providing indefinite power as long as solar generation and battery capacity are sufficient. Islanding requires additional equipment and specific inverter capability. Explore our battery storage range with backup capability.
Which Batteries Provide Blackout Protection?
Among the systems installed by ElectriFusion Solutions, the Tesla Powerwall 3 provides the most comprehensive backup capability with whole-home backup that automatically switches to battery within milliseconds of a grid outage. The Tesla Gateway manages the switchover and can support solar generation during an outage, providing near-indefinite power in summer. The Sigenergy SigenStor also offers backup functionality with single-phase whole-home backup and solar pass-through during outages.
The Fox ESS H3 Pro provides limited backup on the Essential Backup Load circuit — a dedicated circuit for critical appliances such as the fridge, phone chargers, and lighting. It does not support whole-home backup. The Hanchu hybrid inverter supports backup on a dedicated circuit but requires specific configuration at installation. If blackout protection is a priority, we recommend specifying this requirement when requesting a quote — it affects both equipment selection and installation configuration. The additional cost for blackout-capable installation is typically £300–£800 depending on the system and extent of backup required. Discuss backup requirements with our team.
