How Much Do Solar Panels Generate in UK Winter?
The most common misconception about solar panels in the UK is that they don't work in winter. They do — just at a fraction of their summer output. Real data from a 10-panel 4kW system in Doncaster (representative of our South Yorkshire coverage area): July generates approximately 560 kWh; December generates approximately 80 kWh. The ratio is approximately 7:1, which seems dramatic but is actually manageable in the context of a full-year energy strategy.
The key to understanding winter solar performance is that energy consumption also changes seasonally — and not necessarily in the way you might expect. Electricity consumption for lighting, TV, and appliances remains fairly constant year-round. The big seasonal variable is heating, which in an all-electric home (particularly with a heat pump) can dramatically increase winter electricity consumption. For a home with gas central heating and a solar system, winter electricity consumption from non-heating sources (lighting, appliances, hot water immersion) is actually met reasonably well by December's 80 kWh of solar generation — covering around 30–40% of the non-heating electricity used.
Monthly Solar Generation Data for Yorkshire (Real Figures)
Based on actual monitoring data from ElectriFusion Solutions' installed systems across South and West Yorkshire, a 10-panel 4kW AIKO system generates approximately: January 90 kWh, February 130 kWh, March 260 kWh, April 380 kWh, May 470 kWh, June 530 kWh, July 560 kWh, August 500 kWh, September 360 kWh, October 220 kWh, November 110 kWh, December 80 kWh — total approximately 3,690 kWh per year. Summer months (May–August) account for approximately 54% of total annual generation. Winter months (November–February) account for approximately 11%.
Battery storage changes the winter equation significantly. In summer, a 10kWh battery can be fully charged by midday and then discharged overnight — with surplus still exported. In winter, the battery takes all day to charge (and may not reach full capacity on very cloudy days) and then provides 2–4 hours of evening coverage. The winter value of battery storage is lower per kWh than summer, but still meaningful: avoiding expensive evening peak grid electricity at 25p/kWh.
