Battery Storage in Gainsborough
MCS-certified battery storage installation across Gainsborough and the DN21 postcodes, from our base at Gresley House in Doncaster. We fit batteries alongside new solar panels, as a retrofit to panels you already have, or on their own to charge from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff — and we size them from Gainsborough's own generation figures rather than a national average.
Gainsborough's modelled solar output is higher than Doncaster's, Barnsley's or Huddersfield's, and the town sits on an unusual piece of the electricity map, which matters for how a battery is connected. Both are covered below.
How much a Gainsborough roof can store
PVGIS models a south-facing roof in Gainsborough at 986 kWh a year per kW of panels — higher than Doncaster (980), Barnsley (958) or Huddersfield (916), because more sunlight reaches a tilted roof there in PVGIS's satellite record (about 1,214 kWh per square metre a year, against 1,122 in Huddersfield). For a typical 4.85 kW array that works out as:
| Month | Array output (4.85 kW) | Average per day |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 169 kWh | 5.5 kWh |
| Mar | 420 kWh | 13.5 kWh |
| May | 599 kWh | 19.3 kWh |
| Jun | 562 kWh | 18.7 kWh |
| Jul | 581 kWh | 18.7 kWh |
| Sep | 449 kWh | 15.0 kWh |
| Nov | 213 kWh | 7.1 kWh |
| Dec | 166 kWh | 5.4 kWh |
PVGIS 5.2 (EU Joint Research Centre), Gainsborough town-centre coordinates, south-facing at 35°, 14% losses. Monthly averages.
From March to September that array averages between 13.5 and 19.3 kWh a day. Whatever the house does not use while the panels are generating can charge the battery, so on sunnier days a 5 or 10 kWh battery can fill from the roof. In December and January the average falls to around 5.4 kWh a day, much of it used as it is generated. If you want your battery working in winter too, it needs a time-of-use tariff to charge it overnight.
Lincolnshire address, Yorkshire network
Most of Lincolnshire is supplied by National Grid Electricity Distribution. Gainsborough is not. National Grid's own postcode checker returns “Out of Area” for DN21, and Northern Powergrid's open substation data lists the town's primary substations — Lea Road and Corringham Road, both fed from Blyton — in its Yorkshire area. So your battery is registered with Northern Powergrid, not with the operator that serves most of the county.
What you register depends on the total inverter output at the property, including any existing solar inverter. Up to 16 A per phase in total — 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply — is a G98 notification after installation. Above that, for example a 5 kW hybrid battery inverter on a single-phase supply, a G99 application has to be approved before the system is switched on. We submit whichever applies, and it is on the quote.
Batteries on their own, and charging from the grid
A battery on its own can make sense in Gainsborough, particularly where a roof is shaded or a landlord will not agree to panels. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates a battery supplied and installed in a home until 31 March 2027, and that expressly includes a standalone battery that stores electricity from the grid. A grid-charged battery earns its keep by filling when electricity is cheap and discharging in the evening peak.
A battery on its own needs a time-of-use tariff open to battery-only homes, and those set their own rates. For a sense of the spread, Octopus's Flux tariff — which is for homes with solar panels and a battery — published Yorkshire import rates on 16 September 2026 of 14.64p per kWh between 02:00 and 05:00 and 34.16p between 16:00 and 19:00, including VAT at 5%. VAT comes off household electricity on 1 October 2026, so published rates will change; the point is the gap between the cheap and the expensive hours. If you also have panels, do not add grid-charging savings on top of solar savings for the same days — a battery filled from the grid overnight is already full when the morning's solar surplus arrives.
Choosing a battery in Gainsborough
With summer output this strong, the roof is rarely what limits a Gainsborough battery; how much you use in the evening, and whether you want the battery working in winter, decide the size. If you are adding a battery to panels you already have, count the existing solar inverter: a 5 kW hybrid battery inverter on top of it takes most single-phase homes past the G98 limit, which means a G99 application first. If you rent, the landlord's agreement comes before any of that. The models we fit are on our battery storage products page.
Renting, conservation areas and the Willingham by Stow battery farm
If you rent, you need your landlord's written agreement before a battery is fitted. Private renting is common in parts of the town: a 2022 housing report for West Lindsey District Council found 56.7% of homes in the Gainsborough South-West ward privately rented, the highest of any ward in the district.
Planning: West Lindsey District Council is the planning authority, and the town centre is a designated conservation area. If the only wall available for an outdoor unit faces the street there, we check whether the house is listed or otherwise restricted before fixing anything to it.
Grid-scale batteries are a different thing. The large battery storage scheme proposed near Willingham by Stow was a grid-scale site of 160 containers; it was refused by the district council and allowed on appeal in 2025. A home battery is a single wall-mounted unit connected on your side of the meter, under the G98 and G99 rules above.
Gainsborough battery storage questions
Is Gainsborough on Northern Powergrid or National Grid?
Northern Powergrid. Although Gainsborough is in Lincolnshire, National Grid Electricity Distribution's own postcode checker returns 'Out of Area' for DN21, and Northern Powergrid lists the town's Lea Road and Corringham Road primary substations in its Yorkshire area. Your battery is registered with Northern Powergrid under G98 or G99, depending on the combined inverter rating at the property.
Can I have a battery fitted without solar panels in Gainsborough?
Yes. A standalone battery charges from the grid when electricity is cheap and discharges in the evening peak, on a time-of-use tariff open to battery-only homes. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates a battery supplied and installed in a home until 31 March 2027, including a standalone battery that stores grid electricity.
I rent my home in Gainsborough. Can I get a battery?
Only with your landlord's written agreement, because a battery is a permanent electrical installation. Private renting is common in parts of the town: a 2022 report for West Lindsey District Council found 56.7% of homes in the Gainsborough South-West ward were privately rented.
