Why Solar Panel Maintenance Matters

Solar panels are often marketed as maintenance-free, but this is only partly true. The panels themselves are indeed robust and long-lasting, but that does not mean they perform at their best without attention. Dust, pollen, bird droppings, moss, and lichen accumulate on panels over time, reducing the amount of light reaching the solar cells and reducing your electricity generation — and therefore your savings and Smart Export Guarantee income.

Beyond cleaning, annual servicing is essential to check the electrical health of your installation. Connections can corrode, DC isolators can fail, and inverters can develop faults that are not immediately obvious from your monitoring app. Catching these issues early prevents small problems from becoming expensive ones, and ensures your system stays within the terms of your manufacturer warranties.

At ElectriFusion Solutions, we service both systems we have installed and those installed by other companies. Whether you have solar panels only, a combined solar and battery storage system, or a complete solar, battery, and EV setup, our MCS-certified engineers will keep every component performing at its best.

Impact of Soiling on Solar Output

Light dust film −5%
Moderate soiling / pollen −10%
Bird droppings (partial) −15%
Heavy soiling / moss −25%

Output reduction figures are approximate. Actual losses depend on panel type, soiling distribution, and system configuration.

What Our Service Includes

Every annual service visit from ElectriFusion Solutions covers the complete health of your solar installation — not just a quick clean.

Visual Panel Inspection

Close visual inspection of every panel for micro-cracks, cell discolouration, delamination, hotspot damage, and connector integrity. Check all mounting hardware, roof fixings, and rail alignment for corrosion or movement.

Professional Panel Clean

Professional cleaning using purified deionised water and soft-bristle brush equipment. This removes all soiling including bird droppings, lichen, pollen, and traffic film without scratching panel surfaces or leaving mineral residue that attracts future dirt.

Inverter Health Check

Review of inverter error logs for fault codes or performance anomalies. Check DC and AC connections, ventilation, and firmware version. Verify generation data against historical averages to detect hidden underperformance. For hybrid inverters, check battery communication and charge settings.

Electrical Safety Checks

Test DC isolators, AC isolators, and circuit protection devices for correct operation. Check earthing continuity and bonding connections. Inspect DC wiring for degradation, UV damage, or pest interference. Verify surge protection devices where fitted.

Monitoring Data Review

Analysis of generation data from your monitoring system to identify underperforming strings, panels, or time periods. Compare against expected output for your location, orientation, and system size. Identify trends that could indicate developing faults before they cause significant generation loss.

Written Service Report

Detailed written service report documenting all findings, cleaning carried out, electrical test results, and any recommendations for remedial work. This record is invaluable for warranty purposes and provides a clear history of your system's condition over time.

Recommended Schedule

Solar Panel Maintenance Schedule

Solar panels have no moving parts, degrade at just 0.5–0.8% per year, and retain over 80% output at 25 years. UK rainfall helps keep panels relatively clean, but a regular maintenance schedule maximises performance and protects your warranty.

Task Frequency Typical Cost Why It Matters
Panel cleaning Every 12–18 months £80–£200 Removes bird droppings, dust, and pollen that reduce output by 5–15%
Visual inspection Twice yearly Free (DIY) Check for visible damage, loose fixings, or bird nesting from ground level
Monitoring app check Monthly Free Review generation data to spot any sudden drops indicating a fault
Professional inspection Every 5–10 years £50–£100 Electrical testing, earthing check, and full system health assessment
Inverter replacement 10–15 years £800–£1,500 Covered by ElectriFusion lifetime warranty — you pay nothing

With our lifetime inverter warranty, the most expensive maintenance event (inverter replacement) is fully covered. Your ongoing maintenance costs are minimal.

Fault Diagnosis and Repair

If your solar system is generating less than expected, producing error codes, or has stopped working entirely, our diagnostic service identifies the cause quickly and provides a clear path to repair. Common faults we encounter include failed DC isolators, inverter component failures, connector degradation, panel delamination, and damage from bird or pest activity.

Our engineers carry specialist fault-finding equipment including IV curve tracers, thermal imaging cameras, and insulation resistance testers. This allows us to identify issues that are impossible to detect visually, such as internal cell damage or poor string performance caused by a single degraded connector. Most faults are diagnosed and repaired in a single visit.

Where faults are covered under your existing warranty, we handle the claims process with the manufacturer on your behalf. For systems we originally installed, our lifetime inverter and battery warranties mean repairs are carried out at no cost to you. For third-party installed systems, we provide a transparent fixed-price quotation before any work begins.

Upsell and Upgrade Options

A service visit is also an excellent opportunity to review whether your solar system could be upgraded to deliver greater savings. If you have an older system without battery storage, our engineers can assess whether your existing inverter is battery-compatible and design a battery retrofit that maximises your self-consumption.

For homeowners who have not yet added an EV charger, we can discuss smart charging options that allow you to fuel your electric vehicle with free solar energy. We can also discuss adding extra panels if your roof has unused capacity, or upgrading to a newer, higher-efficiency inverter if your current unit is aging.

Our service engineers are not salespeople — they will only recommend upgrades that genuinely improve your system's performance and financial return. Any recommendations are documented in your service report with clear ROI calculations so you can make an informed decision at your own pace.

Solar Panel Maintenance FAQs

Everything you need to know about keeping your solar system in top condition.

How often should solar panels be serviced?
We recommend a professional annual service for all solar panel systems. This typically involves a visual inspection of panels and mounting hardware, inverter performance check, electrical connection testing, and a review of your monitoring data for any anomalies. Panels should also be cleaned professionally at least once per year, or twice per year if you live near agricultural land, busy roads, or coastal areas where soiling accumulates faster.
Do dirty solar panels really affect performance?
Yes — research consistently shows that soiling from dust, bird droppings, moss, and lichen can reduce solar panel output by 5-25% depending on severity and local conditions. Even a thin film of dust that is barely visible can reduce generation by 5-10%. Bird droppings are particularly problematic because they create a hard shadow over individual cells, which can reduce the output of the entire string of panels. Professional cleaning restores your system to peak performance and protects your long-term returns.
Is annual maintenance required to keep my warranty valid?
This depends on the specific warranty terms of your panels and inverter. Many manufacturer warranties require evidence of regular professional maintenance to remain valid, particularly for defects that could have been prevented or detected earlier. At ElectriFusion Solutions, our workmanship warranty requires annual inspection to remain in full effect. We always recommend retaining records of any maintenance or service visits for warranty claim purposes.
Can you maintain solar panels installed by another company?
Yes. We service and maintain solar panels regardless of who installed them. Our MCS-certified engineers are trained on all major panel brands and inverter systems, including AIKO, JA Solar, SolarEdge, SMA, Fronius, Hanchu, Fox ESS, and Tesla Powerwall. If you have concerns about an existing installation or have simply not had a service for some time, contact us to arrange an inspection and health check.
What does a solar panel service include?
A full annual service from ElectriFusion Solutions includes: visual inspection of all panels for cracks, discolouration, or delamination; physical check of mounting brackets, roof fixings, and flashing for signs of corrosion or movement; professional panel cleaning with deionised water and soft brush equipment; inverter performance check and error log review; electrical safety checks including DC isolator, AC isolator, and earthing continuity; monitoring system review to identify any panels or strings underperforming; and a written service report with any recommendations.
How long does a solar panel service take?
A standard residential annual service typically takes 1.5-3 hours depending on system size and access. Larger systems with 15+ panels or difficult roof access may take longer. Our team arrives with all necessary equipment including specialised cleaning tools, testing instruments, and safety equipment. There is no need for you to be present, though we recommend you are available at the start and end of the visit.
What happens if a fault is found during service?
If we identify a fault or defect during your service visit, our engineer will document it in your service report and discuss the findings with you. For minor issues, we can often carry out remedial work on the same visit. For more significant faults requiring parts or additional time, we will provide a written quotation for the repair work. If the fault is covered under your panel, inverter, or workmanship warranty, we will advise you on the warranty claim process and can carry out any warranty work on your behalf.
Do you offer solar panel maintenance contracts?
Yes. Our annual maintenance contracts include one service visit per year, priority scheduling, discounted call-out rates for any fault repairs, and annual monitoring report. Multi-year contracts are available with a discount for 3-year commitments. Contracts can also be combined with battery storage servicing and, where applicable, air conditioning maintenance to create a comprehensive home energy maintenance package.
