The national picture, with the price bands for other system sizes and the things that move a quote up or down, is on our solar panel costs guide page. This page does the South Yorkshire arithmetic: what those packages actually generate here, and what that is worth at this winter's electricity price.
What the same system generates in each borough
PVGIS, the European Commission's solar model, puts a south-facing roof at 35° in each of the four boroughs at the figures below (PVGIS 5.2, SARAH2 radiation database, 14% system losses, fetched 15 October 2026). Doncaster, on the flat eastern side of the county, edges the Pennine foothills by about 4%.
| Borough | Yield per kWp (south, 35°) | 10-panel 4.85 kW system | 8-panel 3.9 kW system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doncaster | 980 kWh/yr | about 4,753 kWh/yr | about 3,822 kWh/yr |
| Barnsley | 958 kWh/yr | about 4,646 kWh/yr | about 3,736 kWh/yr |
| Rotherham | 952 kWh/yr | about 4,617 kWh/yr | about 3,713 kWh/yr |
| Sheffield | 943 kWh/yr | about 4,574 kWh/yr | about 3,678 kWh/yr |
These are unshaded, south-facing figures. Our town pages quote 3,800–4,400 kWh a year as the typical range for the real roofs we survey, which sit anywhere between south and east–west and usually carry some shading. An east–west split roof makes about 20% less than the table; a north-facing slope about 45% less. Shading from a chimney, a dormer or next door's trees comes off on top, which is why the survey models your actual roof before we confirm a price.
A worked example: a Sheffield semi with 10 panels
Take the Standard package, 4.85 kW at £6,499, on a south-facing Sheffield roof. PVGIS gives about 4,574 kWh a year. Without a battery, a typical household uses about half of that as it is generated and exports the rest.
| Line | Figure | How it is worked out |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity used at home | 2,287 kWh | 50% of 4,574 kWh |
| Saved on the bill | about £585 a year | 2,287 kWh × 25.60p, the Ofgem price cap for the Yorkshire region on direct debit, 1 October to 31 December 2026 |
| Exported | 2,287 kWh | the other 50%, paid under the Smart Export Guarantee |
| Export income | £91 to £343 a year | at 4p to 15p per kWh, the range of SEG tariffs our customers are on; the rate is set by your supplier, not by us |
| Total first-year benefit | £676 to £928 | saving plus export |
| Simple payback | 7.0 to 9.6 years | £6,499 ÷ first-year benefit, before any price-cap change or panel degradation |
In Doncaster the same system makes about 4,753 kWh, which lifts the first-year benefit by roughly 4% and trims the payback accordingly. Adding the 5 kWh battery (the Plus package at £9,499) typically raises self-consumption to 70–80%, so more of the output is worth 25.60p rather than the export rate; whether that is worth £3,000 depends on how much of your usage is in the evening, which is exactly what the survey measures.
What moves a South Yorkshire quote up or down
Roof and access. Scaffolding is included in the package, but a three-storey terrace in Sheffield's Nether Edge or a roof over a conservatory can need an extra lift or a different mounting system. Stone-built Pennine-edge houses in Barnsley and the Sheffield side of Rotherham sometimes need longer roof hooks. Planning rarely adds cost, but the exceptions (listed buildings, flat roofs in conservation areas, Sheffield's Article 4 streets) are in do you need planning permission for solar panels in South Yorkshire?.
The inverter and the grid. Up to 3.68 kW per phase, the installation is notified to Northern Powergrid under G98 after it is commissioned. The 4.85 kW and 5.8 kW packages use an inverter that may exceed that, in which case a G99 application goes in before the install; we do the paperwork, and it can add two to four weeks to the timeline but not to the price.
A battery. Fitted with the panels, a battery shares the scaffold and the electrical visit, which is why the Plus package costs £3,000 more than Standard rather than the price of a separate retrofit.
VAT. 0% on domestic solar and battery storage until 31 March 2027, after which the rate returns to 5%: a Standard package would cost about £325 more. Commercial installations pay 20% VAT; our commercial solar page covers those separately.
Grants are a separate question from price: the schemes that apply to a South Yorkshire home, and who qualifies, are on our solar panel grants page, and the full UK price comparison behind these packages is in how much solar panels cost in South Yorkshire in 2026.
ElectriFusion Solutions is based at Gresley House, Ten Pound Walk, Doncaster, DN4 5HX, and covers the whole of South Yorkshire from there; the full list of towns is on our solar panels in South Yorkshire page. Every installation is carried out by our own engineers under our MCS certification for solar PV and battery storage (NAP-77364).
Solar panel cost in South Yorkshire: your questions
How much do solar panels cost in South Yorkshire in 2026?
From ElectriFusion Solutions, an 8-panel 3.9 kW system starts at £4,999 and a 10-panel 4.85 kW system at £6,499, installed, with 0% VAT on domestic installations until 31 March 2027. Adding a 5 kWh battery to the 10-panel system takes it to £9,499. Those are the fixed package prices on our town pages; a survey confirms the final figure for your roof.
Does the price differ between Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley?
The package price is the same across the four boroughs because the kit and the labour are the same. What differs is the output: PVGIS models a south-facing roof at 980 kWh per kilowatt-peak a year in Doncaster, 958 in Barnsley, 952 in Rotherham and 943 in Sheffield, so the same 4.85 kW system makes about 4,750 kWh a year in Doncaster and about 4,570 kWh in Sheffield.
What is the payback period on a 10-panel system in South Yorkshire?
On the worked example on this page, a 4.85 kW system in Sheffield at £6,499, using half its output at the Ofgem cap rate and exporting the rest, pays back in roughly 7.0 to 9.6 years depending on the export rate your supplier pays. A battery, a higher daytime usage or a south-facing roof in Doncaster shortens it; a north-facing or heavily shaded roof lengthens it.
Is VAT really 0% on solar panels?
Yes, for domestic installations of solar panels and battery storage in Great Britain, until 31 March 2027, when the rate returns to 5%. Commercial installations are charged VAT at 20%. Our package prices already include the 0% rate.
Do I need planning permission or a grid application in South Yorkshire?
Panels on the roof slope of a house are usually permitted development, including in most conservation areas, provided they do not project more than 0.2 metres from the roof and are not on a wall or roof fronting a highway in a conservation area; listed buildings always need consent. For the grid, an inverter rated up to 3.68 kW per phase is notified to Northern Powergrid after installation under G98; anything larger needs a G99 application before the work starts, which we handle.
What does the quoted price include?
Panels, inverter, mounting, scaffolding, the electrical work, the DNO notification or application, commissioning, the handover pack and the monitoring app, plus a 15-year workmanship warranty and up to a 30-year panel warranty. There are no hidden extras: if your roof needs something unusual, the survey says so before you commit.
